"Jane Kenyon is our Akhmatova. She will be read and remembered here as
Akhmatova is read and remembered over there. For this we give no thanks
because the gift is beyond thanks. But how deeply we are
indebted!" —Hayden Carruth |

Poetry 1-55597-196-2, 64 pages, Paper
Contance sounds the depths of depressive illness, and of the
grief brought on by the illnesses and deaths of loved ones. Yet
Kenyon, as always, finds solace in a union with the creation, which she
regards as the showing forth of a great goodness. The poems are
controlled, yet dense with feeling. They are clearly located in the
physical world, and yet they speak of ineffable things.
