Lake Effect: Two Sisters and a Town's Toxic Legacy
7:00 p.m. talk, Shorewood
As children growing up near Lake Michigan, Nancy Nichols and her sister, Sue, never thought about the effects pollutants in the lake could have on their health until Sue was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer in 1992. With little family history of the disease, Nichols vowed to find out if industrial pollutants caused her sister’s and her own illnesses. The result is Lake Effect, which tackles her family’s emotional journey, and uncovers the history of Superfund sites and the chemicals that were dumped into the lake.
