"David Rosenthal's well-proven craftsmanship does full justice to the original, reconstructing the  matter-of-fact poetics and down-to-earth emotion of Rodoreda's idiom. . . . We have a paradox in the fact that the rare combination of a literary masterwork and a superior translation has not  encouraged any of the major commercial publishers to adopt and promote Rodoreda's work. It has fallen to the good taste and criterion of Graywolf Press to introduce the American  audience to this fine example of a lively minority literature. . . .
