"For many students [in a course on East African Language, Culture, and History] Sardines was their favorite of eight books for the course. With an intelligent, independent, intellectual and cosmopolitan woman and her circle of family and friends at the center of the novel, the book explodes many myths and stereotypes about Africa and African people while providing many insights into traditional and contemporary Somali culture. The compelling and elegant literary style of the book is also an eye-opener to many students with little exposure to African culture.
