Discussion Topics - If You Want to Write
Download as a pdf (If You Want to Write) or view the questions below.
- If You Want to Write is often praised as an
instruction book for life as well as writing. In what ways is this
true? How closely is our “creative life” tied to daily life? How
closely should it be tied?
Brenda lived by two rules: to tell the truth, and not to do anything
she didn’t want to do. Is this really possible in life? What can be
achieved by doing this?
- Brenda believed that creativity came slowly and that nothing
imaginative will be produced if you did not allow yourself time to be
bored. She stated, “imagination comes, works, when you are not trying,
when you have a peculiar passive clarity.” What does she mean by this?
- Why did Brenda feel it wasn’t important to be published or make money by writing?
- Right in the beginning Brenda claimed that “Everybody is talented,
original and has something important to say.” Discuss how this may be
true or untrue.
