Linda Gregg wins the William Carlos Williams AwardMarch 25, 2009--Graywolf Press is pleased to announce that All of It Singing: James Longenbach, this year’s judge, writes of the winning poet: "Linda Gregg is a visionary poet. The fact that this is not immediately apparent constitutes the power of these extraordinary poems, poems that have been accumulating with a quiet, slow-burning majesty for nearly four decades. What strikes us first is the simplicity of means, the doggedly monosyllabic diction and the baldly declarative syntax. The means say: you may trust me, or, I will not lie to you. Then we feel the vivid inhabitation of lived experience, a human being speaking to other human beings about landscapes that, however exotic, we recognize immediately."
The William Carlos Williams Award is endowed by the family and friends of Geraldine Clinton Little, a poet and author of short stories and former vice-president of the PSA. The prize is for a distinguished book of poetry published by a small press, non-profit, or university press. Other winners of the 2009 Annual Award winners include X. J.
Kennedy (Frost Medal for Lifetime Achievement), Ron Padgett and Gary
Young (Shelley Memorial Winners), and Richard Deming (Norma Faber First
Book Award). Linda and the other award winners will be honored at a ceremony on Wednesday, April 29th at 7:00 PM at the National Arts Club in New York City. |
