Graywolf Press is a literary press that publishes about twenty-four books annually, mostly collections of poetry, memoir, essays, novels, and short stories. Each year, we publish around nine collections of poetry, one or two collections of poetry in translation, and one or two collections of essays on poetry. We very rarely publish poetry anthologies.

Reading Period: We accept queries postmarked between January 15 and December 1.

Poetry Submissions
If you would like us to consider your work, please send a one-page query letter addressed to the poetry editor, with a brief work sample from your poetry manuscript. In this one-page query letter and work sample, please include:
-- a paragraph containing relevant biographical information;
- a brief description of the manuscript;
-- a list of published works (books, magazines, anthologies, online);
-- ten pages of poetry, as a sample from the manuscript;
-- and a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) for our reply only. We cannot reply if a SASE is not included.

Submissions of Poetry in Translation
If you would like us to consider your translations of poetry, please send a query letter as described above, with biographical information about the poet whose work you have translated, as well as information about your work as a translator, a sample of ten pages of the translations with the corresponding originals, and a SASE for our reply only. Graywolf’s translation list focuses on contemporary poets translated by contemporary translators.

Submissions of Essays on Poetry
If you would like us to consider your essays on poetry, please send a query letter as described above, one sample essay of no more than twenty double-spaced pages, and a SASE for our reply only. Graywolf’s list of essays on poetry focuses on contemporary poets and poetry, and new critical perspectives on the craft of poetry.

We have a small editorial staff, and we respond to queries within three to six months. Graywolf does not currently accept submissions of any kind by phone, fax, or e-mail. Please do not send your poetry on disk. Because of the volume of submissions, we simply cannot take phone calls or respond to emails inquiring about the status of manuscripts.
